A moving inspirational speech by Charlie Chaplin–Wish the world listened

We want to live by each others’ happiness, not by each other’s misery.

Wish the world is listening to this inspiring speech by Charlie Chaplin …

(Charlie Chaplin):
I’m sorry but I don’t want to be an emperor. That’s not my business. I don’t want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone if possible; Jew, Gentile, black men, white. We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that. We want to live by each others’ happiness, not by each other’s misery. We don’t want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone. And the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone. The way of life can be free and beautiful, but we have lost the way.

Greed has poisoned men’s souls; has barricaded the world with hate; has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge as made us cynical; our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery we need humanity. More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost. The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together. The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in man; cries out for universal brotherhood; for the unity of us all.

Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world, millions of despairing men, women, and little children, victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people. To those who can hear me, I say “Do not despair.” The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed, the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish.

Soldiers! Don’t give yourselves to brutes, men who despise you and enslave you; who regiment your lives, tell you what to do, what to think and what to feel! Who drill you, diet you, treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder! Don’t give yourselves to these unnatural men—machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are not cattle! You are men! You have a love of humanity in your hearts! You don’t hate! Only the unloved hate; the unloved and the unnatural.

Soldiers! Don’t fight for slavery! Fight for liberty! In the seventeenth chapter of St. Luke, it’s written “the kingdom of God is within man”, not one man nor a group of men, but in all men! In you! You, the people, have the power, the power to create machines, the power to create happiness! You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure. Then in the name of democracy, let us use that power.

Let us all unite. Let us fight for a new world, a decent world that will give men a chance to work, that will give youth a future and old age a security. By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power. But they lie! They do not fulfill their promise. They never will! Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people! Now let us fight to fulfill that promise! Let us fight to free the world! To do away with national barriers! To do away with greed, with hate and intolerance! Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men’s happiness.

Soldiers, in the name of democracy, let us all unite!

I was in an accident and I tried to make the system work – This is my story

Stories BY All

Last year on same day 23rd April a car hit me while I was crossing Udyog Vihar – Cyber City road in Gurgaon. The driver fled from site leaving me hapless and helpless on the road. I called police helpline number just to open a can of worms and further my ordeal  .

A policeman came on bike after half an hour hurling abuses to the person who wasted his time. He didn’t care that I was bleeding but admonished me for calling police on such petty matters. He was furious when I told him that I wanted my complaint to be lodged.

He took me to the Udoyg vihar police station where another SI, who was equally abusive, gave me two papers and a carbon to write my complaint till he comes back. He returned after two hours and sensing I was still there got irritated. He asked for paper and tore it down after reading ( I had written that Police help reached at site after half an hour of my calling 100) .

He asked me to write complaint as per his narration which I refused. He left me on the intervention of other policemen and proceeded outside irritated with the instruction to the clerk to receive whatever I would write. After receiving further usual harassment and abuses I could manage to get my complaint registered with Police. Now getting a copy of that complaint was another story but I am sparing the readers from that.

The doctor doing medical at government hospital was equally rude and corrupt. He didn’t even check me and wrote “no hurt mark /injury is visible” . I signed the MLC with writing on it that my medical was not done properly .A lot of commotion ensued and again I could manage to get a proper MLC report. I am again sparing readers with details of what would have happened.

Here, I want to mention, I had put part of harassment story on FB during waiting at police station and several of my good friends offered me help but idiot inside me refused to get work done on any recommendation this time. The only bright spot was constable who had taken me to the hospital , his words would always echo in my mind- “ Sir sabhi log aapki terah fight kare to system mess ho jaayega but sudhar jaroor jaayega, aapke jaise log muje theek lagte hai” .

As expected, no FIR was lodged in the case. I filed an RTI with Harayana Police about my complaint. On my RTI , the SI who was so abusive at the time of lodging complaint called and pleaded to take back RTI or not file appeal. As a stubborn idiot, I filed appeal on not receiving reply within 30 days of stipulated time. Within some days I got reply on my RTI that a FIR has been lodged on my complaint given to Udyog Vihar police station on 23rd April 2013.

Noting happened for a year and I was also enjoying my happy life when today in the morning at 9:30 I received a call that I need to present at court at 10 AM for recording of my evidences. I was just about to reach office and was reluctant to go.

Reluctantly I reached court at Rajiv Chowk where I was asked to wait for my turn. I was feeling uneasy after spotting the person who hurt me one year back mixing with Public prosecutor and police in the court. They were planning to take next date for the case. I directly approached magistrate ( Civil Judge) and requested that I am called upon to record evidence in this case.

The Judge smiled on my audacity and ordered to call accused. The public prosecutor, accused and his advocate were stunned to see that I directly approached the Judge. The PP requested court that as the evidence has not seen file, sometime must be granted on which I promptly replied that I didn’t need to screen file and wanted to go ahead with recording evidence.

The PP and accused advocate requested judge to initiate mediation in the case; I again interjected and said I want no mediation. The Judge looked at PP smilingly who was very embarrassed. He said he was ready to record evidence. The accused advocate again pleaded judge for at least a chance to make a try to get my mind changed. The Judge this time requested me to listen to them for 5-10 minutes.

I went outside , where accused’s advocate tried to convince me very earnestly and offered me some money by saying “ har cheese ki kimat hoti hai Garg sahib, ab itni si galti pe fansi thode hogi” . I said “ muje bhi pata hai fansi nahi hogi , but itne court k chakker kaatne k baad aapka muvakkil atlest agli baar shayad itni rash driving na kare , aur shayad me kisi potential poor aadmi ki jaan jaane se bacha loo” . The advocate laughed loudly (mockingly )and proceeded towards court. The long 7 foot accused was visibly exasperated.

So I have just finished a long 2 hours grueling questioning by the advocate and posting this with a mixed feeling that system never helps, one must have courage to force it to help you. There are lots of things provided through laws like RTI but we must not feel fear in using them. In the end I don’t care whether that accused get any punishment or not , all I care is I did my duty !
